The Powder Bath

One of the things I am most excited for with the new house is the bathroom situation. Mostly just that there is more than one of them. :) There is a powder bath on the parlor level, and any powder bath to me just begs to be adventurous! Look how sad the bachelors made this bathroom! It's down right desperate for some love and better lighting.

I can't decide about that little sink. It's original I guess and it could be sort of cute with a skirt? Wouldn't something really quirky like this sink (and that mirror!) be amazing?

For the walls, I would naturally gravitate toward a crazy, loud wallpaper pattern like this one:

Palmer Weiss

With an interesting mirror:

Houzz

But the room is tiny (like 3x4) and I don't really feel like papering around mirrors and lights and fixtures with almost every single sheet. I'm thinking I might try a decorative paint treatment.

Martha Stewart's Faux Bois kit might be perfect. I've heard it's a really fun project and that the rocker tool is super easy/forgiving. (demo video here) But I'll run into a similar problem af having to work around things on the walls.

I'm leaning toward hand-stamping the walls with a wood block. I bought this pretty 3x6" floral stamp here and I think it's worth trying. It could be a really quick, fun project. The hardest part might be choosing the color combos for the paint!

Also diggin' that black trim in the corners. It really helps define the walls, right? Otherwise things might get a little dizzying in there with all the small pattern. Very nice.

Josef Frank Ceylon Fabric Pillow

Joanna and I both share a love of Josef Frank textiles. The designs are so gorgeous! But the fabric is really hard to find and it is extremely expensive. We splurged on one yard of the Ceylon print at Just Scandinavian in Tribeca.

We used this down blend insert from Pottery Barn Teen because the dimensions were perfect for one long pillow on Joanna and Alex's queen size bed (most body pillows would have been too long). I really love the look of a single pillow on a bed. It's so unfussy - and it was a great way to maximize our yard of Josef Frank fabric.

We used black piping on the edges for a bit of contrast.

Here are some affordable fabrics with a Josef Frank vibe that would also look pretty and graphic on a big pillow.

The Ultimate Luxury: D. Porthault Linens

Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Coco Chanel all used D. Porthault bed linens. They are uber luxurious, and come with a price tag to match.

The company has a big white sale twice a year and the next one starts this coming Monday, the 16th. I've been dying to go and just see if there's anything even remotely affordable. After all, 40-80% off of very expensive = still expensive.

As if I needed fuel to add to the fire, Lonny posted this image on their blog yesterday, and I'm dying over that pattern! Where is my money tree when I need it?

Spied some more D. Porthault in MS Living. Also, is that my rug?!?

The quality of D. Porthault sheets, towels, cases and coverlets is supposed to be unrivaled, but if you like them just for the cute floral patterns, you might try checking out Urban Outfitters for lots of cute, very affordable bedding.

Fancy Foyers

Today I'm dreaming of living in a beautiful apartment with a formal entry papered in Gracie or de Gournay.

I think it would be fun to try and paint an oversized and stylized floral/vine pattern in the entry way/wall of our next place. I like a loose design, sort of like this pattern I spied on the walls at Forever 21 a while back.

Probably not yellow though. Maybe midnight blue? With a huge antique mirror.

Maybe I'll buy a couple of floral design books in the meantime and sketch up some ideas...

Maybe something more like these colors:

Vintage Scarves as Pillows

One of my clients inherited quite a few vintage silk scarves from her grandmother. Lots of Liberty of London and Vera.

We're putting the collection to good use. One will be framed and several others made into pillows. One of my favorite scarves is a sweet blue Liberty of London floral that will go on a chair in the nursery. It looks just like this one, available here:

Both Martha and Eddie Ross have featured this same idea for turning scarves into pillows and shared their instructions here and here.

Framing vintage scarves is another great idea.
